We got Nate's progress report this week and saw that he is on track to get straight A's! He has struggled with attention issues at school since day 1 and his report cards have reflected on this deficit. I was so happy to see that he is doing so well, but now I feel like I should reward him.
Rob and I differ a lot on rewarding our boys and have never been close to the same page. He thinks $.25 a day (yes...I said 1 quarter!) is a good allowance and I feel that $5 a week is good. I feel like the kids should have new shoes for school every year and he thinks that if they don't have holes in them, they are still fine as hand-me-down tennis shoes. We rarely spend money on clothes because our neighbors spend an incredible amount of money on their boys and they give us all of the clothes...For instance, I got a bag FULL of Levi jeans, size 8 and 10. Some of the labels were still on the jeans. There were probably 5 to 6 pairs of each size! Don't get me wrong! I am not complaining in any way! I am SO completely grateful for the awesome clothes. We have gotten Sideout t-shirts, Old Navy polo style shirts, skater shoes, Old Navy trousers...NICE STUFF!!! But I just have no sense of reality in spending money for my boys. I feel that we are WAY under the norm (except in sports) on spending for kids, but I see others who are excessive. I want my kids to grow up with a respect for money and material things.
Do you reward your children for their good grades? What type of allowance do you give your kids? And what age do you start?

We are so inconsistant in this aspect.. But I definately would do something for getting straight A's. That is so awesome!
We told the boys at one point that they'd get $5.00 for every A. But that was the first quarter & we haven't done anything since.
We don't give them allowance unless they ask & re have seen that they have been consistant on their chores. But then again they can't even keep their freakin room clean!!! And they do a half A job on most chores!
WAY to go Nate!! You are awesome & we are so proud of you!!
At the end of each quarter,we give $5 for every A, $1 for every B, nothing for a C, they pay us $1 for a D and heaven forbid if my kids ever get an F--I don't know what I'd do. We live more like Rob, we don't give allowance--the kids earn money for "extra" jobs--not normal jobs. We don't buy our kids things unless they NEED it or it's their birthday. Obviously with the way the economy is, people spend way too much and I am afraid the kids are learning all the bad habits from their parents. I could go on and on--sorry. I am a total believer in budgeting money and saving for a rainy day and I foresee many rainy days ahead for this economy.
WoooHooo Nate! Way to go!
Well, I'm gonna have to side with Rob on this one. Money and stuff is a poor motivator in the long run, in my experience. I would ask Nate what he would like to do to celebrate this amazing feat. Notice I said DO not GET. I'll bet money [hahaha!] that he'll surprise you with his heart's desire!
That little stinker - give him a high five for me!
Have you guys thought of compromising with the allowance-- like $2.50 a week? :)
That is awesome - great job Nater!
We give the girl's allowance every Friday. They get half as many dollars for years. For instance Lexi gets 4.50 a week because she just turned 9. I would start with Nolan right now. The kids put 10 percent for tithing and ten percent for savings and the rest they can do whatever they want with. If they do not do the chores on their chart then we can figure out a compromise - I usually ask them if they want to pay me to do it? Jarrod thinks they should not be paid unless they get all their chores done. I give the girls their francs and I am the one who usually cleans up so it is getting done my way :)
As for grades - we do not pay money for kids to get good grades. It is a lot different in Switzerland because they have a new system where the kids are actually getting grades - funny - totally extreme opposite of Lexi's old school. We feel like the only "job" these kids need to do is go to school, every thing else is an extra.
I hope that makes sense - miss and love you!
